With a highly limited range in nature, the Ornate Boxfish is of the rarest boxfishes that enter the trade. The Marine Center is one of the only places you'll find this incredible fish! All of the normal precautions for the care and handling of boxfishes apply here. Like all boxfishes, it should only be housed with non-aggressive tankmates. If housed with bold feeders, it will have trouble competing for food. Make sure you keep an eye on this fish during feeding time if kept with any remotely bold feeders, and beware that it may never adapt in such a situation. Better still; keep this fish only with fish totally dissimilar fish, which don't compete for food (like mandarins!) The Ornate Boxfish rarely bother other fishes, but like any boxfish, do not keep it with bold active fishes such as trigger or large wrasses (such as Thalassoma sp.) Fairy Wrasses on the other hand are suitable tankmates. In other words, know your stuff before contemplating this (or any) boxfish. Once adjusted to aquarium life and begins feeding, they usually fare somewhat better than other common boxfishes, despite their being a cool water species. Good thing, since they are very expensive!
