This is one of the most spectacular of all reef fishes, sporting alternating yellow and white bars with dark borders, a yellow tail and pelvic fins and a blue "chest." Juveniles have a blue eyespot on the rear of the dorsal fin and body. Notoriously difficult to maintain, most individuals are often reluctant to feed, exceptionally shy, and tolerate no abuse. Despite these drawbacks, it is one of the most popular aquarium angelfishes and usually a safe bet in reef aquariums. Popular opinion is "Pacific Regals are bad", "Red Sea Regals are good". Specimens from both regions have an equal chance of adapting, provided they're well handled. There are several areas in the Pacific that provide good specimens. None are easy, and difficulties are inherent to this species, regardless of origin. Specimens from the Pacific have a bluish chest; while those from the Red Sea and Indian Ocean have a yellow chest they otherwise look identical. Generally regarded as reef safe, most of those we sell go into reefs. A reef tank is usually the only place this fish has a chance of adapting. In a bare "fish tank" with nothing to graze on, this fish usually starves to death. This fish will not adapt if it perceives any threats from tankmates. All these same notes apply regardless where the fish is from.
