| Fast Facts |
The juveniles of this species are blue overall, with light blue lines on the body and a transparent tail (juveniles might also have some orange on the back). Adults are spectacular, with orange on the sides, back, dorsal fin and tail, with blue spots on the scales, a dark blue mask, or girdle, that starts on the top of the head and extends onto the "chest." The pelvic and anal fins are also blue. This species, especially larger adults, can present the aquarist with some husbandry problems. One of the keys to keeping it successfully is it must be kept with exceptionally peaceful tankmates. It will not adapt if it senses a threat from tankmates. Keep in mind we humans may not notice any threat from other fishes, but the fish will. Juveniles are very reclusive, spending almost all of their time hiding among the aquarium decor. Seldom adapts if kept with remotely boisterous fishes. Adults are also shy, but will make more forays into the open than their smaller counterparts. This fish is easily startled, and will need many hiding places if it is to feed comfortable. When this fish does well in captivity, it can be bold toward related species or similarly shaped fishes introduced after they have become well established in the aquarium. |
