Hammer Coral Green

Hammer Coral Green

Latin Name Euphyllia sp.
Common Name Hammer Coral Green
Also known as Anchor Coral
Fast Facts The ever-popular Green Hammer Coral can do well under excellent conditions and are not difficult to maintain, but we do not recommend them for those new to the hobby, basically because they're rough shippers. Actinic lighting will help bring out their color. While they're beautiful and can thrive under the right conditions, Euphyllias should not be considered by apprehensive hobbyists. If you're nervous about mail ordering coral or new to the hobby, Euphyllia may not be for you. These corals have sharp skeletons covered in extremely thin tissue, which is inevitably scuffed up by collection and shipping, so "perfect looking" non-expanded specimens are virtually non-existent. Once expand they look great, but the unexpanded skeletons will look a little scruffy to those unaccustomed to handling these corals. In branching types, it is not unusual for one branch to die after shipping, but since the branches are not connected, the others will be fine. If you're getting nervous, buy this one locally! There are many other corals that travel better, although Euphyllia aren't as bad as we're intentionally making them sound. All Euphyllia should be given plenty of room to expand, and then some, because they expand large and have sweeper tentacles that extend several inches at night that can sting other corals. Acclimates best in low current and low to medium lighting. Do not place directly under intense lighting or expose to high water flow. If you've read this far, you might give these beautiful corals a try!
